Port nGen File Field type to EE2?

I have upgraded to EE2 and while the file feature is robust, it is not nearly as elegant and user-friendly as the nGen field. I saw in another thread that there are no plans to port nGen to EE2 because "the new File type in EE2 does everything and then some that nGen file does."

The big problem with with the File field in EE2 is that is allows users to choose where they want to upload a file instead of predefining that for them, which creates stress and confusion for my non-technical users. Would the restrictions on nGen prevent me from porting this to EE2 myself? If I do port it, would the restrictions prevent me from sharing that port? I do not want to run afoul of any licensing issues here, but I would like to have this functionality again.

Chad, the copyright on ngen file does prevent such things as a port. We are thinking about an EE2 version however client work comes first and we've been very busy.

Keep an eye out on Twitter for any future announcements of an EE2 version.
